Best Electric Grill
I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but in some grilling circles, just the mere mention of the word “electric” is considered a cardinal sin.
Now, while I understand that some people are rather traditional and simply love the authentic grill flavor, the truth is, most gas grills require a lot of space and can’t be placed too close to any structure.
And don’t get me started on charcoal grills.
When your family wants some traditional grilled chicken for lunch, what should you do? They could be fantastic for picnics and celebrations.
Well, based on my own experience, a four-person household does well with indoor electric grills.
They are easy to operate, don’t need a lot of care, and most importantly, they produce excellent food, making them significantly more affordable than gas models.
What more could you possibly want?
What Should You Look for in an Electric Grill?
Electric grills have been around for a while, so there are literally hundreds of different models out there, and naturally, not all will suit your particular taste.
But you’re in luck because as someone who’s owned a couple of models over the years, I can help you with your choice by pointing out a couple of things you should pay special attention to while looking for an electric grill.
Cooking Surface / Size
The size of the electric grill is, of course, determined by the size of the cooking surface (also known as the grilling plate). For instance, the average countertop grill has a cooking surface that ranges somewhere between 80 and 200 square inches.
So first of all, consider who you’re cooking for. A 200-square-inch surface is big enough to grill four patties for a family of four. However, if you want to cook large pieces of meat (like steaks); you’ll probably have to cook them in two or three batches.
Power Level
Next up we have power, and why is power so important for your electric grill? Basically, the wattage determines your cooking time – the higher it is, the faster the grill preheats itself. The average electric indoor grill has a power level between 1500 and 1800W.
You can also easily find an inside grill that has a power level of 600W if you want to cook a small amount of meat. However, if you’re planning to cook thicker pieces of meat such as pork, you should opt for something stronger.
Non-Stick Plates
Today, these plates are practically available on just about all indoor electric grills (you can also find an outdoor electric grill with non-stick plates without much effort). This additional layer of coating prevents your food from sticking to the grill.
This coating makes the cleaning process much easier, but you should be aware that these surfaces can degrade over the years especially if you use the grill on a daily basis. So try to keep your plates as clean as possible.
Timer and Shut-Off Switch
No one likes overcooked food, which is why some grills come with a built-in switch that lights up and automatically turns off the machine when the food is finished. And even though this feature isn’t really necessary, at times, it’s sure handy.
What’s more, you could also look for a grill that has a “set-and-forget” timer that allows you to set the exact preparing time, sit back, and wait for your meal. The timer is there to alert the user when the food has been properly cooked.
Heat Control Functions
Most grills reach temperatures up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, but some have fixed heat settings, while others come with adjustable temperature dials that give you more control over the cooking process. This is very useful if you’re cooking different kinds of foods, which require different heat levels.
So instead of preparing everything at the same temperature, and having your meal either over or undercook, you’ll be in complete control. Once again, if you’re going to cook thicker slices of meat, you should pick a grill that can reach at least 500 degrees.
Safety Features
Last but not least, when you’re working with hot electric grills, safety should be your number one priority, because millions in property damage every year result from grill fires. In fact, according to the US Fire Administration, roughly 52% of all fires occur because of grills.
And while standard grills are far more dangerous, if you’re keeping your electric grill indoor, it’s important to pick a model that has a number of safety features. Furthermore, if you don’t want to burn your hands while cooking, it would be wise to look for a griller with cool-touch handles.
Most Recommended Electric Grills: Detailed Reviews 2022
While all of the information above will definitely help you narrow your search, that’s not why you’re here, is it?
I bet you are looking for something more specific.
And that’s why I’ve spent the last couple of weeks researching and creating a shortlist of the grills I consider to be the best on today’s market.
In addition to a ton of research (I spent a good amount of time reading professional and user electric grill reviews), the list is also based on my personal experience with each grill.
But without further ado, let’s dive right into the list.
George Foreman GGR50B Indoor/Outdoor Grill
Let’s start things off with the perhaps most well-known name in the industry. Even though this isn’t the only grill from this manufacturer on the list, this George Foreman Indoor/Outdoor Electric Grill has a whopping 240-square-inch grilling surface, adjustable range, and the Foreman’s famous grease draining system.
It can handle practically any food and is perfect for camping spots where open fires are not allowed. The enormous grilling surface will allow you to cook a full meal (you can even prepare whole birds on it) for the whole family at the same time.
But if you’re planning to bring it with you for a picnic, keep in mind that it takes up a lot of space. The cover is great, easy to adjust, and keeps the smells and smoke away efficiently. For the price, this grill provides great value.
Things I Liked:
- It’s very easy to assemble and use, so it can be carried and used both indoors and outdoors
- The serving plate can be detached without much effort, so it’s easy to clean up
- The 240-square-inch grilling surface allows you to prepare a variety of different foods
- The grill is quite affordable and provides good value for the price
Things I Didn’t Like:
- Even without the pedestal, it’s still somewhat top-heavy
- Cleaning may be a chore since the size of the grill is not suitable for small kitchen sinks
- Considering its size, it naturally requires a lot of counter space for indoor use
- The power supply cord is only five feet long, so it’s not quite perfect for outdoor use
Char Broil TRU Infrared Patio Bistro Electric
Many electric grills aren’t actually what you’d call “barbecue-capable”, but this indoor smokeless grill truly deserves this title. It actually looks like a classic backyard grill, and while an electric grill can’t give you that real smoky flavor, the Char Boil sure comes close.
If you’re not too experienced with grilling, don’t worry, because basically anyone can use this one. All you need to do is turn a knob and oversee the meat. The lid is attached to the back and gives you the familiar feeling of the big grills like you’ve seen on TV.
With Char Broil Patio Bistro Electric Grill, you will get well-seared meats in less than 60 minutes, without any major hassles associated with charcoal and gas grills. The cord could have been a bit longer, and the heat retention is not as good, but for this price, you’ll have some great barbecues for sure.
Things I Liked:
- It’s extremely easy to use, and it’s great if you’ve never grilled before
- It has a compact design (and actually looks like a classic grill) and easily fits onto a patio
- The grill only takes a couple of minutes to heat up (reaches 550°F in less than 30 minutes)
- The size allows you to prepare up to 10 hamburgers at a time, so it’s perfect for gatherings
Things I Didn’t Like:
- The temperature drops quickly as soon as you open the top lid of the grill
- It doesn’t come with a built-in tool rack, which is somewhat inconvenient
- Just like the aforementioned George Forman grill, it comes with a short power cord
- It’s more difficult to assemble than your average electric grill (you’ll definitely need a few tools)
Cuisinart GR-4N 5-in-1Griddler Silver/Black
This fresh new design of the Cuisinart Griddler has a five-in-one capacity, boasts over 150W of power, and has the Panini press functionality out of all of the grills on our list. It allows the user to cook a wide selection of foods including eggs, bacon, chicken, and steak.
It’s made from stainless steel, and the handle is very sturdy, and its hinge release allows you to flip it back and create more cooking space. Additional features include the drip tray that’s designed like a drawer, which catches all the grease your meat releases as you cook.
Buying GR-4N Griddler, you get a capable device for a decent price. The unit is not perfect, but it’s good enough to prepare some quick meals. The package doesn’t include the waffle plates – you’ll have to buy them separately. It all comes down to your needs and preferences.
Things I Liked:
- Obviously, it offers five-in-one capabilities, from a Panini press to an electric griddle
- Removable cooking plates allow you to drain grease and fat while you cook your meal
- Unlike most grills, it only takes around three minutes to get to the optimal temperature
- If you don’t have enough meal ideas, don’t worry, because the grill comes with a recipe book
Things I Didn’t Like:
- If your counter isn’t properly leveled, the grease probably won’t go to the drip tray
- The non-stick surface is rather fragile and can be damaged easily in the dishwasher
- The waffle plates are sold separately, and it could use more power to griddle pancakes.
- It has only two control knobs for temperature and doesn’t include a timer

Hamilton Beach 25360 Indoor Searing
This electric grill may not have a Panini press or any fancy features like some other grills we mentioned here, but seeing how it costs less than $70, you’ll certainly get a lot for your money. Essentially, for a small fee, you’ll get a quality indoor grill that will give you something very similar to outdoor grilling results.
The design is great, and the grill looks pretty attractive, which really matters if you plan on displaying the machine on your kitchen countertop. The cooking surface is also top-notch, so you won’t need too much oil to grill fish or chicken. And once you’re done, the high-quality surface can be cleaned easily without any scrubbing.
Like the other models on today’s review list, 25360 lacks cable length. In addition, there is no window included in the basic package – you’ll have to pay an additional fee for it. Still, if you’re on a budget and want to get an indoor grill, I think you can’t go wrong with this one.
Things I Liked:
- It’s large enough to cook for a four-member family and compact enough to fit into a kitchen
- Stakes prepared on it taste the same as ones grilled outside on a classic grill
- It’s more than safe to use in the house, as long as it’s properly ventilated
- Seeing how the lid, plate, and drip tray are all removable, you can easily clean it in the dishwasher
Things I Didn’t Like:
- If you’re grilling a large steak, the lid can be hard to close
- It only has a single heating element located on the bottom and not on the top
- This particular model doesn’t have a window, so be ready to open the lid regularly
- The grill is useless without an extension cord because the power cord is just 24-inches long

George Foreman GRP4800R Multi-Plate Deep Dish
This particular Forman grill might not function well as an electric outdoor grill like the aforementioned GGR50B model, but it has an exciting new searing function. This particular feature allows you to heat the grill to 500 degrees F for a minute and a half and give yourself a restaurant-quality meal at home in no time.
The temperature settings, which are displayed conveniently on the grilling unit, can all be adjusted with a simple push of a button. Lastly, this George Foreman electric grill comes with an adjustable cooking angle that enables you to level out the grill (and set it back on an angle) without any tools.
It is a bit pricier than its two predecessors, but in my opinion, this appliance is simply that good. The functionality it brings puts it to another level. If you’re looking for an indoor grill for some quick and healthy meals, you might find a perfect companion here. On the other hand, if you’re more into barbecues for many people, you might want to avoid this one.
Things I Liked:
- Adjustable plate levels ensure that your food doesn’t slide forward
- Comes with a baking pan and waffle plates, plus you can buy additional plates separately
- It allows you to cook a meal in a matter of minutes (a filet mignon takes only around five minutes)
- The price is quite reasonable considering the features the grill has to offer
Things I Didn’t Like:
- The ceramic plates aren’t perfect, and after a while, they can be hard to clean
- The controls are confusing, so you must be prepared to skim through the manual a few times
- The removable plates don’t heat up nearly as quick as non-removable plates do
- If your meat isn’t thinly sliced, the sear function doesn’t work properly

So Which Electric Grill Should You Choose?
This may come as a surprise, but making a decision wasn’t actually that hard.
You see, the Char Boil might have the size, and Cuisinart GR-4N Griddler might have the looks, but if you’re looking for the best all-around electric grilling experience, George Foreman GGR50B is the clear winner.
And don’t get me wrong, it’s an attractive appliance, with a slick and modern look that looks great on any kitchen countertop, but more importantly, it offers the closest grilling experience you’ll get from indoor cooking while being capable of grill outdoor as well.
You just can’t go wrong with this one. 😉
